The Village of Harwood Heights Works to Regain a Strong Financial Status
Bordering the city of Chicago just 13 miles northwest of downtown, the Village of Harwood Heights styles itself "A Small Town of Big Opportunities." After Wallington, NJ, it is the community with the largest population of Polish Americans in the United States (18.8%), and also counts a sizable Italian American community amongst its residents.
After the village failed in its bid for annexation into the city of Chicago in 1947, a majority of its residents voted for incorporation the following year, and the Village of Harwood Heights was born. Over six decades later, the Village enjoys a distinct identity separate from its big city neighbor – a character celebrated in Thomas Gowen's 1989 book Island Within a City: A History of the Norridge-Harwood Heights Area.
